Above the text, Jennifer waved. The crowd erupted into applause. “Imagine it,” Wyatt uttered, shouting to be heard above the crowd. “A piece of technology that can allow you to effortlessly keep track of everybody you’ve ever met, supply the context of where you last met them, and prepare you with relevant facts about their lives?” He went on with a note of awe, “Awkward small talk, misremembered names, and social uncertainty could become a thing of the past.” He turned to face the crowd, who saw themselves projected on the screen behind Wyatt. “All to get back that”—the names and social data of everybody in the crowd simultaneously resolved, giving a short blurb of context for each and every face in the front row he looked at—“genuine human connection.” The crowd went wild. Cam cheered harder than anybody, so proud that Sofia’s project had gone live onstage. Only, when she looked over, Sofia wasn’t cheering.

“Sofia! I didn’t know your project had already been integrated and was launching today!”

“Me neither,” Sofia said, all color leaching from her face.
